Vikings Bolster Running Game with Jordan Mason Acquisition

The Minnesota Vikings are signaling a strong commitment to their rushing attack heading into the 2025 season, acquiring running back Jordan Mason from the San Francisco 49ers. The trade, reported by NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, involves a 2025 pick swap (Minnesota receiving pick No. 187, San Francisco receiving No. 160) and a 2026 sixth-round pick.

To further solidify Mason’s role, the Vikings have signed him to a two-year contract, guaranteeing over $7 million with a maximum value of $12 million. This move continues Minnesota’s active offseason, which has already seen significant additions to their defensive line (Jonathan Allen, Javon Hargrave), interior offensive line (Will Fries, Ryan Kelly), and secondary (Byron Murphy).

Mason’s potential was evident last season when he stepped up in Christian McCaffrey’s absence. He displayed powerful running, accumulating 789 yards and three touchdowns. Notably, he recorded three 100-yard rushing games in his first four appearances of 2024. While injuries hampered his later performance, his early success highlighted his capabilities.

He is poised to form a formidable tandem with Aaron Jones, who recently signed a two-year extension. Jones, known for his speed and agility, has faced injury challenges and is now 30. Mason, with his physical running style, offers a complementary “thunder” to Jones’ “lightning,” providing valuable depth and versatility.

The Vikings’ rushing game struggled beyond Jones last season, ranking 19th overall. Adding Mason addresses this need and provides crucial support for second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, or whoever leads the offense.

For the 49ers, this trade marks another departure of a key player, following the exits of Deebo Samuel, Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, and Javon Hargrave. This move suggests San Francisco’s confidence in a healthy Christian McCaffrey and the emergence of young running back Isaac Guerendo. Additionally, acquiring draft capital is crucial as they potentially prepare to extend quarterback Brock Purdy.

In essence, the Vikings have made a strategic move to strengthen their running game, while the 49ers are navigating roster adjustments and future planning.
